Produce to try: salad greens early and later in the season, cantaloupe and watermelon. Hillerich 1

In their second year at the Beechmont Open Air Market, the Hillerich Family Farm is truly a family operation. If you stop by their tent, you will often find three, or even four generations serving customers and sharing information about their produce.

The Hillerichs are perhaps best known for their freshly-picked salad greens, which are available in the first few weeks of the market, and in the last few weeks of the market, as they require cooler weather to grow. They are also known for their melons, including cantaloup and watermelon which will be available soon. Right now, they have a lot of squash and zucchini, which you can cook as they do, by slicing it thin and coating it in a mixture of olive oil and basil and then grilling it. They also recommend making kale chips by coating washed and dried kale leaves in olive oil and your favorite seasoning mix, then baking until crisp. They recommend brown sugar and garlic salt, for a sweet/salty chip, or just garlic salt for the savory route.Hillerich 2

The Hillerich Family Farm is nine acres and located off Seatonville Road near Fern Creek. You can find their produce served in over 30 restaurants around Louisville, including the Bristol downtown, BBC, Bistro 301, Another Place Sandwich Shop, Molly Malone’s, Rye, and Harvest. They ended up at the Beechmont Open Air market because Troy Hillerich’s wife, Jeanette, grew up in the Beechmont neighborhood and loves interacting with the friendly neighbors every Saturday morning.Hillerich 3

Be sure to stop by and meet the Hillerich family this Saturday at the Beechmont Open Air Market, 8:00 a.m. – noon, at the corner of Wellington and Southern Parkway.
