Sustainable South Louisville rises again !

indexSustainable South Louisville is becoming active again.
For the past several years, we have limited ourselves to life as a Facebook page, but we have decided to come out of hiding with projects we would like to accomplish to make Beechmont a more sustainable place to live. And we want you to come join us. A small group has been meeting to develop plans to build a public orchard on the vacant lot at 3rd St. and the Interstate ramp, across from Thornton’s.
We are currently waiting for approval from the State highway dept. Danice Creagor is working on that with Dan Johnson’s office and Maria Koetter, Louisville’s Director of Sustainability. If that site falls through we have a couple others that may work as back ups. We really want that site for its visibility. It could become a flagship for other projects to come.
Ruby Backert and Laura Hosbach are also planning a rain garden on the library grounds to divert water from the storm sewers.

We are hoping to get donations from a number of area businesses:
Monty’s Joy Juice (manufactured on Allmond Ave.)
Wilson’s Greenhouse
Gagel’s Nursery
Limbwalker Tree Service (one of the owners lives on the Parkway)
Root Cellar (also lives on the Parkway)

If you know anybody associated with these businesses and would be willing to talk to them, let us know. If you know of anyone else who may be interested in helping out in some way, let us know that as well.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 14 at 6:30 at my home, 4553 Southern Parkway. If you are interested in getting involved in these projects, join us and let your voice be heard. There are many steps to this process and many places where your help will be needed.
