Hands On History is an educational series designed to give participants a hands-on, in-depth overview of various preservation issues and methods of maintaining and preserving historic buildings.  Preservation Louisville is co-sponsoring this workshop series along with the Metro Louisville Historic Landmarks Commission and the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office. Programs are presented with support from The Brown-Forman Corporation.

Throughout the series, participants will learn practical techniques for working with original materials and finishes to maintain restore and preserve historic elements such as plaster, woodwork, gutters, roofing and masonry, and how to incorporate new materials when necessary.  Adapting “green” concepts for historic structures, and historically appropriate landscaping will also be explored.

Guest Speaker: Bruce Cohen
Master Plumber, B.C. Plumbing

Bruce Cohen started BC Plumbing in the early 1970’s, when Old Louisville’s rebirth began. It was the beginnings of a Renaissance of sorts that was transitioning those homes from rundown buildings to the beautiful structures we see today.

However, because of the challenges of plumbing present in older homes, very few plumbers back then wanted work in these neighborhoods. BC Plumbing’s humble beginnings were here, working to renovate and repair the plumbing in these homes. Moreover, it’s where BC Plumbing gained a wealth of valuable experience in the intricacies of working with older plumbing.

Where many plumbers will say “replace”, BC Plumbing has the experience to offer “repair” as an option, should that be the homeowner’s wish.
